My son is 4. Can he write? Yes. Is it legible? Yes, but he has a tendency to write the letters sort of funny (he has issues crossing the mid-line, so the letters end up kind of choppy). My two year old actually has an easier time making words and letters as they’re supposed to be. We have a Leap Frog thing that has been very helpful (I’m usually not very gun-ho with all the electronic hoo-has, but this one has been really nice). I’m not sure what it’s called, but it’s just a little tablet with a setting for shapes and a setting for letters…the letter will appear on the screen in lights and the child traces over the dots. It’s helped my big guy figure it out without it stressing him (and me) out. My younger guy has just seemed to catch on a little more naturally. If your guy isn’t getting it easily, I’d suggest the Leap Frog thing…also, old-school, paper sheets with the letters and have your kid trace them. My niece (5) has penmanship that fits between the lines on wide-rule notebook paper. My 4 year old has penmanship that takes up about four lines. My 2 year old (coming up on 3) has writing that is somewhere around 3 lines. My 2 year old (also coming up on 3) niece writes big, but will write smaller if you remind her (my older boy seemingly doesn’t have the ability to write small at all). It really does vary by kid, and if you’re working on it, I wouldn’t worry too much. The beauty of home schooling is that you don’t have to worry about where he’s ‘supposed’ to be so much, some kids just take a little longer to grasp things, especially if it’s not constantly being worked on with them. The earlier you start things, the easier it tends to be. As for the colors…I don’t really know. At 5, I would encourage him to use a few different ones. I think it is a developmental thing actually, but if all else is well, I don’t think it’s anything to soil yourself over.

The color is Komodo, as in Komodo Dragon. The color of a Komodo is unique and stands alone.
Good luck to you.
