Should I grow some Guava plants from a seed or just buy the plant already grown?
My grandma has some guava plants, and I would like to grow some of my own. I understand that guavas are different from plumerias, which can simply be propagated by cutting a branch and planting it. I’m considering whether to obtain a fresh guava from my grandma and grow three or four plants from the seeds, or if I should purchase already grown plants. I'm also unsure if there are other methods to cultivate them that would ensure the seedlings don’t die off or that the plants don’t bloom at odd times, like our apricot tree does, especially given the unusual heat and weather we’ve been experiencing. Any suggestions?

Good morning Pit Chick,
I hope you are having a great day. I just put in some red onion bulbs. I plant my vegetable garden in two week intervals to avoid being swamped. Guavas are my favorite fruit. My Strawberry Guava is over twenty (20) years old.
I would never plant a guava tree from seed. Guavas do NOT GROW GOOD FROM SEED. If it does produce, it will take your tree six (6) years or longer. I have included my favorite website from the University of Florida to verify my answer. Please read the part under “Propagation”. DO NOT waste your time starting from a seed. Go to your local nursery and buy one that is already started. You will have guavas the following year.

MY FIRST QUESTION: What I don’t understand is why you need more than one plant? How big is your family? Full grown Guava plant/trees usually give off enough fruit to feed an army. My Strawberry Guava yields fruits twice (2) a year. I give guavas to all the family, the neighbors, and the gardener. We also make strawberry guava jelly and guava juice.

MY SECOND QUESTION: Do you know there are over a hundred varieties of Guavas. You should strongly consider planting difference types of Guavas. I have tasted the strawberry, pineapple, lemon, and apple. It is up to you. What type of fruit favor do you like? They all taste great. Plant a Guava plant/tree that taste like your favorite fruit. People are always surprised when I tell them my Strawberry Guavas are sweeter and taste better than a real strawberry. They always agree after tasting one off my tree. I have included a website with difference varieties. You may want to plant two (2) difference types.

FACTS: Guavas are called the “superfruit”. Guavas contain four (4) times more vitamin C and more nutrients (potassium and magnesium) than an orange. Pit Chick that is why I planted my guava tree.

I have nine (9) rare fruit trees and a 20×20 feet vegetable garden. I research and study every plant/tree before I plant it. This year I am researching and thinking about planting a “Peanut Butter Tree”.

My grandma has some guava plants, and I am wanting some plants as well. I am well aware that the Guava is unlike the Plumeria where you just hack off a branch, stick it in some dirt, and it grows. I am not sure if i should get a fresh guava from my grandma and grow about three or four plants from…

First are you sure Guava trees are grown in your area? Are you willing to baby it and drag it in and out of the house if the weather isn’t just right? Actually you can grow anything as long as the temps and enviroment is perfect for that plant.
if u want to wait a couple of years for your guavas, go with the seeds. if not, buy the tree already with roots from a nursery, that way you dont wait, u know how it look, where you will have it planted. plus, u can always plant some seeds from your grandmas trees, if they grow, if, you’ll have a living memory of her.
you could use the strawberry and tomato seeds from mature fruit, but since most of these are hybrid varieties your results might not be good. It would help if you could find heirloom varieties of each, but then any disease resistance will be lost. At this time of year your too late to propagate tomato plants from seed anyway. might as well buy some plants.
Buy the plant. You will get a known fruit in quicker time. Seeds are not always true to variety.
Both are good for you, each fruit/vegetable has different vitamins. And so as more variety, as better. Vegetables have generally less sugar than fruits.
All fruits are fresh vegetables. A “vegetable” is a plant, any part of which is employed for food.
