Skyrim: Why cant I harvest canticle bark?

I'm on the Unseen Visions quest in Dawngaurd. I'm on the side of the Dawnguard. I have obtained the knife I need, but I can't seem to harvest the bark! I go third person for what I believe is the animation of scraping the bark off, but my character doesn't move and no bark is added. I've tried every tree in the place, and I've tried reloading saves many times. Nothing works. PLEASE HELP!!!
