Napoleon Bonaparte (French: Napoléon Bonaparte; French pronunciation: [napoleɔ̃ bɔnapaʁt], Italian: Napoleone di Buonaparte; 15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821) was a military and political leader of France. He also served as Emperor of the French under the title Napoleon I. His actions significantly shaped European politics in the early 19th century.

He was born in Corsica to parents of noble Italian descent. He trained as an officer in mainland France and became an important figure under the First French Republic. Bonaparte led successful campaigns against the First and Second Coalitions. In 1799, he staged a coup d'état, which resulted in his appointment as First Consul. Five years later, the French Senate declared him Emperor. During the first decade of the 19th century, the French Empire under Napoleon engaged in numerous wars known as the Napoleonic Wars, involving every major European power. Following a series of victories, France emerged as a dominant force in continental Europe. Napoleon maintained this influence by forming various alliances and appointing friends and family members to rule other European countries as French client states.

The French invasion of Russia in 1812 marked a turning point in Napoleon's fortunes, as his army suffered significant losses during the campaign and was never the same afterward. In 1813, the Sixth Coalition defeated his forces at the Battle of Leipzig. The following year, the Coalition invaded France, leading to Napoleon's exile to the island of Elba. Less than a year later, he escaped from Elba and regained power. However, he was ultimately defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. Napoleon spent the last six years of his life in confinement by the British on the island of Saint Helena. He died of stomach cancer, although Sten Forshufvud and other scientists have suggested that he may have been poisoned with arsenic.... Show More
