Not Medical Advice: If you mean "bursitis" (bur-SY-tis), it is a painful condition that affects the small, fluid-filled sacs — called bursae (bur-SEE) — that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles near your joints.

It occurs when bursae become inflamed. The most common locations for bursitis are in the shoulder, elbow, and hip. However, bursitis can also occur near the knee, heel, and the base of the big toe.

It is most often caused by repetitive, minor impacts on the area or from a sudden, more serious injury. Age also plays a role; as tendons age, they are less able to tolerate stress, are less elastic, and are easier to tear.

Individuals with arthritis are at risk of developing bursitis due to altered body alignment and movement. Improved body awareness and good mechanics can help prevent bursitis.

Tip! Bursitis is the inflammation of a bursa caused by bumping, bruising, repeated pressure, or overuse. Learn 10 ways to deal with bursitis at Health.howstuffworks.com.
