The Girl Who Leapt Through Time ending explained?

I just finished watching the anime and i was confused about the ending. What did Chiaki mean when he said that he would be waiting for her in the future?? So I did a little research online and someone came up with this explanation:Now, because Chiaki had rolled back time to point B) and not point F), the conversation between Makoto and Chiaki never occurred (though curiously, she remembers it occurring) and Makoto never used her last time-jump. When she realizes this, she uses her last time jump, to “Super-Jump” all the way back to the beginning of the movie at point A). She confronts Chiaki with the truth and time-walnut. She tells Chiaki that she can’t time-jump anymore (having used her last time-jump to get her here). HOWEVER, she gives Chiaki a used-up time-walnut! This means that Chiaki must actually still have 90+ time jumps. She never used any of them because she time-jumped back to a moment before she had used any time-jumps! The movie has already established that it is possible to “take back” your time jumps by jumping to a time period before you used your time jumps. You could argue that you need someone else to time-jump you, and you can’t “time-jump yourself” to get your time-jumps back, but the movie doesn’t definitively support one argument over the other since it only tracked Makoto’s time jump at 90, 50, and 1. Anyways, even though Makoto “knows” about time-jumps, in this new reality, Chiaki is “safe” from the law, because he technically never “told” her about it yet. You can’t fault a guy for doing something he hasn’t done yet, right? Now at the end of the movie, I think that Chiaki then realizes that Makoto still has 90+ time jumps, so he’s telling her that he’s waiting for her to jump into his time. source: http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/42/t1611144-girl-w… Your thoughts? Does this explanation make sense? Thanks in advance!

It is an open ending , it is not meant to have one specific explanation…He said that he’ll wait for her so that there can be some hope and the watcher is free to decide whether they ever meet again or not... Show More
This movie was made to be a bit confusing, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to read too deeply into it in terms of the technical stuff. The painting seems to have a mysterious significance to the future, so maybe someone else time leapt before Chiaki and ended up in a similar situation with Aunty witch. I think the message of the movie is that you need to cherish the present, and make the most of what you have instead of running away from your feelings, because you won’t always be able to go back. Time waits for no one.... Show More
You guys are over thinking the ending. Remember Makoto promised Chiaki she will make sure the Painting doesnt get destroyed so that Chiaki will see it in the future. That’s why Chiaki said he will be waiting in the future. Because Makoto will be taking care of the painting until Chiaki looks for it in the future. So yes by that time she’s already older than Makoto, maybe too much maybe not much, the apocalypse can happen anytime in the future. As for the walnut breaking when Makoto handed it to Chiaki: (this is more theoretical but is more acceptable for me than Makoto getting her 90 Leaps back)Remember Chiaki revealed that there is a “rule” that they cannot tell anybody from the Past about Time Traveling. After Makoto’s final Leap to the past, when she showed the Walnut to Chiaki, during this time Chiaki doesn’t know yet that he was the one who revealed it ‘TimeTraveling’ to Makoto. After Makoto explained everything to him, the walnut cracked when it touched Chiaki’s hand. Because Chiaki broke the rule, and is probably no longer allowed to use the device. Think of it as a fail-safe, like if someone tries to hack your phone, and if the hacker enters the wrong password too many times, the system will delete everything in its database making it useless. In this case the walnut device destroyed itself.... Show More
i read the thread and disagree about makoto still have 90+ jumps..everytime she jumps, the total jumps left will decrease. so, when she “super jump” back to the first point, her total jumps left would be 00 and not 90+..the reason she still have 01 jump is because the one who leap the time is chiaki. . . ok my english is bad and i know it 0_____0... well what i think is that Makoto will invent the time traveling machine or the machine that can make people time travel .. remember when she said that she has made a decision for her future and when Kousuke asked her what it is she said it’s a secret… maybe her decision is to see Chiaki so that why she cant tell it to Kousuke and that decision give her a reason to create the time machine … well it’s just my theory... the ending is kinda confusing! chiaki is from the future, and makoto is from the past. chiaki went back from his era bcoz he needs to.when chiaki said that he’ll wait for her in the future, its means that if makoto is 50 y/o chiaki might be 10 y/o? (or watever era he will be born) (-_-)??? i guess its really an open ending... Show More
It’s worth mentioning that it is not 90, 50, and 1, it is 06, 05 and 01. She is reading the numbers upside down when she first sees them. After we first see the number 06, all her jumps are shown in the film, so you can count them down to 01 and 00.... Show More
If chiaki got a time walnut, I always thought that he could just get another one and go back to makotos time... Show More
I think it means he will time leap back and she will get her leaps back, they could infinitely leap in this fashion, provided they always leap back with the last... Show More
