The maximum number of orbitals possible in 4f is?
What is the maximum number of orbitals possible in the 4f subshell? I would appreciate it if you could provide an explanation, as it would be very helpful. Thank you!

seven
Explanation:
f stands for azimuthal quantum number l=2
The different orbital shapes are specified by the magnetic quantum numbers which are
m = -l, -l+2,…,0,…,l-1, l
so all in all there are 2*l +1 different orbitals.
For l = 3 there are 2*3+1=7 different orbital shapes.
So for a 4f orbital (and all other f orbitals), there are seven different orbitals possible.
