During the 19th century the US government gave Hawaiian sugar planters very generous trade conditions that made them earn large profits especially after the American civil war. But in 1890, the US Congress imposed tariffs on imported sugar and Hawaii wasn't part of the US at that moment.

The action that led wealthy planters in Hawaii to fear their sales and profits would decrease was: 1) The imposition of a new U.S. tariff on Hawaiian sugar In 1890, the McKinley tariff Act increased United States tariff duty on imports about fifty percent, in order to protect domestic industries and decrease competitive prices in the local market. Sugar wealthy planters feared their sales would decrease as the U.S. was their larger buyer.
