What causes “weeping” in skin abrasions & how should these wounds be treated?

My sister has a wound located on her chin that is “weeping.” The wound is inflamed, is slightly red & is painful. How should this be treated?

the weeping is the body’s auto-immune response to injury or infection….wash it well a few times a day with warm water and mild soap (dove or ivory). using soaps with dyes or perfumes can irritate the wound more.after washing, apply a thin layer of neosporin to help treat any germs that are present and to help kill any new ones that try to form. the chin is a tricky place to put gauze on so just try covering it with a large bandaid-this will help keep out germs. she will need to report to her doctor or an urgent care asap if she develops the following symptoms-she develops a fever of 101.5 or higher-the wound starts to swell more or has increased redness-the drainage is green or yellowish-brown in color-the wound develops a sponge-like cover to it that is yellow or green in color -she has red lines extending from her chin to the rest of her body (indicates infection in the bloodstream-will require i.v antibiotics to treat it)these are all signs of serious infection and she will need antibiotics to treat it.good luck... Considering the Staph infections going around, you should get to a Dr ASAP.No “abrasion” should weep much. They usually crust and scab quickly and cease to be painful in a day or so. The fact it is increasing in redness, and pain, AND weeping, could mean infection.Better safe than sorry.... Show More

The “weeping” is the body’s own immune defenses working overtime. Put on some triple antibiotic ointment and a clean bandage and she should be fine in no time. The pain, swelling, and redness are also indicators of an infection trying to settle in. Keep it clean, keep it covered.... Show More

Lisa has it right. Keep it clean, keep it covered. Use neosporin or bacitracin or any antibiotic ointment, but keep the wound covered. A covered wound heals better and faster than an uncovered wound, and there is less risk of infection when it is covered.... Show More
