what does abalone taste like?

What does abalone taste like, and how would you describe its texture and flavor profile? Are there any specific culinary uses or preparation methods that enhance its taste?

I've been eating abalone since I was able to scuba dive with my dad (Geez, I miss that man!!!). Abalone has a very delicate taste, similar to squid (Calamari) when pounded and breaded (properly prepared) it's delicious......Very expensive, even here in California......They are now sea farming them, since greedy divers used to "poach" for them off season, which ruined it for everybody.......

Abalone has always tasted like abalone to me. I was introduced to it young in life, and to me, it has its own unique flavor. I would not even compare it to other shellfish.

I am a former chef and have eaten and cooked it a number of times like the one person said it has a sweetish taste like scallops, a bit mariney like a clam , buttery is another explative. When I worked in Japan, they really like them, both the white and black varietys, if you ever get a chance to see the episode of the Japanese Iron Chef series, they do one show devoted entirely to it. There to tenderize them the pressure cook them with daikon radish, it has an enzyme to help make it tender, lightly cooked like squid and octopus it can be a nice cold or hot item, mainly it is used in soups, braises and stews. They sell tinned ones in most large Asian grocerys, it is not cheap $10-20.00 a can, I have used it that way to in soups with another delicacy "shark fin", both have very little distinct taste and absorb the flavours they are cooked with.

If prepared correctly, it is kind of like a sweet oyster, or a little more like the sea than a clam.

If you haven't had either, then somewhat like tender, but slightly chewy calamari, and has a faint taste of the sea.
