what does Alene mean in the name Coeur d’ Alene?
What does "Alene" mean in the name "Coeur d'Alene"? I understand that it is a French name and that "coeur" means "heart." Could you provide more insight into the meaning of "Alene" and its significance in this context?

"Coeur" indeed means "heart" in French. Here's an explanation of the name (I presume that you are speaking of the city in Idaho):
"The French name Coeur d'Alene (pronounced core Da lane) was given to the Schee-Chu-Umsh Indians by early French Canadians or by French-speaking Iroquois Indians, who traveled through the area in the 1790s. Its literal translation is "heart of awl," meaning hearts like the point of an awl (a leather-working tool). The reason it was applied to the tribe is still a mystery. The most common explanation is that it was an attempt to describe their shrewd, sharp, tough trading practices."
By the way, the pronunciation that they provide is incorrect. It is not "core Da lane," but "keur Da lenn," I believe. It's kind of hard to explain the sound that "coeur" makes, seeing as the sound doesn't exist in English.
Coeur d'Alene means "heart of the awl". But that does not make sense as an awl could not have an heart or even a center! (If you want to know what it is, look in a dictionary). But you can look up Coeur d'Alene on Wikipedia and read about its history and name origin.

I know that it is a french name and the coeur means heart
Well I'm French so I can tell you that the pronunciation "core da lane" is wrong. CŒUR means heart and the pronunciation of "oeu" in the word COEUR is the same than the "u" in the word "curly" or than the "i" un the word "first". The pronunciation of the "a" in ALENE is like the "a" of "happy" or "hard". And the pronunciation of the "e" is like the "a" of "any" or the first "e" of "every". And I can tell you ALENE doesn't mean anything in French. And in America you changed the spelling. The real spelling is " Cœur d'Alène" and not "Coeur d'Alene". Hope I helped you! ?
