What does ‘Da ne’ mean in Japanese? I had the impression it meant ‘No’, but apparently I’m wrong…?

I came across the phrase "Da ne" in Japanese and was under the impression that it meant "No," but it seems I might be mistaken. Could someone clarify its meaning? For context, an example of its usage can be found in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DCKAlAsHTI at the 0:13 mark.

Please note that I’ve transcribed it based on how it sounded to me, and I’m not sure how it would actually be written in Romaji. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

You've got it wrong. In the video, they are saying "Dame," not "Da ne." The two are completely different.

Dame (駄目) means no, it's no good, you can't do that, etc. Dame somewhat like saying "no" in English.

Da (だ) is an existence verb. It basically means "to be." Ne (ね) is a particle that indicates agreement, emphasis, etc. For example:

Kore wa kanpeki da ne?

これは完璧だね?

This is perfect, isn't it?

In this case, "ne" = "isn't it?"

"Da ne" don't have a equivalence in english.

Da is some kind of casual version of "desu" used to express the "state of being"

"Ne" is used when you are looking for agreement to what you are saying.

kawaii da ne : Isn't cute?

kekkou takai da ne : Is pretty expensive dont you think the same?
