what does DD 5.1 and DD 2.0 mean for DVD player sound?

I want to purchase a DVD from Poland because I need Polish subtitles, which this DVD includes. However, under the sound section, it doesn't specify languages like English or Polish as some other DVDs do; it only lists "DD 5.1" and "DD 2.0." Could someone explain what these terms mean? Additionally, will this DVD still work when I try to play it on my laptop or DVD player? Thank you!

DD means Dolby Digital and the numbers are the number of channels. DD 2.0 is only two speakers, left and right, DD 5.1 is full surround sound, Right Front, Right Rear, Left Rear, Left Front, Center (voice/talking) and the .1 is the Subwoofer. It should still play on your laptop as long as the DVD is region coded for your region. That means that if you are in the US, you are in region 1 and it will play any region 1 coded DVD. The coding is used to prevent purchasing a DVD in one region and sending it to another region to be played there. Not all movies are released around the world at the same time, US could release a DVD before Europe, Asia, etc. Check the region of the DVD, should be on the back side near the bottom.

Dolby Digital (Surround sound) 5.1 is 5 speakers Left-Front, Right-Front, Left-Back, Right-Back, Middle on top of the television or behind you and Sub woofer, 2.0 is Left-Front and Right-Front

It will be down to the disc to have the Polish Subtitles on it or Polish Audio, it wont be to do with the DvD players sound at all, Also make sure you get the right region (anything from Europe is R2)

You dont need to buy a dvd from poland for this as most DvD's have an Audio and Subtitle feature so you can change them to your needs, means they can sell more

DD is Dolby Digital.

5.1 means 5 speakers and a subwoofer (Front L+R, Surround L+R, Centre, Sub)

2.0 means 2 speakers (stereo - L+R)

I guess it should work.
