What does the abbreviation “SQ” found on menus stand for? Could you please explain the original words, the language of origin, and what the term literally means?

Could mean two things – the first and most likely:
Subject to Quotation or Market Price – Seafood prices can change so rather than reprint the menu, they say SQ or Market Price to they can adjust the price accordiing to their current cost. Example – Lobster Tail – SQ/market

It’s illegal to sell squirrel meat, so they call it “chicken”, but add the SQ so that you will know.
If you mean a food menu, it probably means squash. Only the thought of squirrel for dinner creeps me out.
