What does “stuck in second gear” mean?
Hello, I am a student learning English as a second language. Yesterday, while watching the TV series Friends, I came across the phrase “stuck in second gear.” Could anyone explain its meaning? Thank you in advance!

It’s a mental image of an automobile. Car transmissions have gears, first is the slowest (used to get the car moving from a stop), second is a little faster, third is the next fastest and sometimes there is a fourth or fifth gear. Usually for traveling at high speeds, one would use fourth or fifth gear. So, second gear is not going very fast.
The idea here is that one who is “stuck in second gear” is not performing to their best potential and is not moving toward their goal very fast.
I hope this helps. Please return and select a best answer from all of those submitted.
Close guys. Cars used to be 4 gears, one is reverse. That makes 3 forward gears, so being stuck in 2nd gear keeps a person held back from full potential
“Stuck in second gear” is referring to your motivation, your “drive”, your energy…
A car in second gear doesn’t really get anywhere very fast, and this is a way of also describing a person, or yourself.
For example, if you have an essay due, and you just can’t get going with it, you could say that you were “stuck in second gear”.
I hope this helps….I am no expert ð
It’s a metaphor. It means that your life isn’t going as well as it could be. A cars top speed is in like 4th or fifth gear so if your stuck in second gear your not going as fast as you could be. So you haven’t reached your full potential.
