what dog shampoo should i use on my siberian husky?
What type of dog shampoo is best suited for a Siberian Husky? Are there specific ingredients or formulas I should look for to ensure their coat and skin stay healthy? Additionally, how often should I bathe them to maintain optimal coat condition?

Using an “oatmeal” based shampoo is best. I bathe my Huskies pretty frequently because they roll in nasty stuff, and are constantly in the lake and dirt. If a hose down doesn’t “un-stink” them, it’s bath time. I’ve used any shampoo.. from store brands to expensive brands. The ones that say “oatmeal” or “for sensitive skin” are what I use on my 3. They don’t seem to be as harsh as the others. Also i use dog conditioner too… all it really does is keep the smell on longer and give the coat a soft feel. Most places have a matching conditioner for the shampoos, but all will have at least one “special skin care” or something along those things, conditioner.
And as long as you don’t overuse a furminator, there’s nothing wrong with them. I use mine once a month on my dogs and don’t notice and ruined or damaged coats.
Hi,
I have a purebred Alaskan Malamute (oddly enough, his name is KODA!)
Koda only gets bathed and his fur trimmed once per year. They have self-cleaning coats and stay odor-free and shed dirt and what not very rapidly. The grooming session is just for his fur when the outercoat starts to grow too long (especially in his hind leg/butt area… NOTHING worse than a malamute going #2 and getting some of it stuck in his hind hairs!)
So, groomers recommend, as do many malamute websites, that you use DRY shampoo on these breeds. As many posters have said, they have natural oils in their skin and on their fur…. as such they dont need wet shampooing and it isnt recommended that you bathe them too frequently (twice per year is good)
So, dry shampoo is the way to go… and again, no need to groom an arctic breed more than twice per year. Obviously the need to rake their coats and get up that undercoat is required very regularly. I try to do Koda twice a month (outside!, because he can FILL a 13 gallon kitchen garbage can with 1 raking session!)
Hope I helped.
I worked at a grooming shop, in Michigan, for two years and saw several huskies…every eight weeks. They never once came in with a skin problem.
Just a basic shampoo will work. It however must be pet shampoo. Never use human shampoo on animals. Their PH is far different from ours and it will dry their skin and coat out. One pointer, get a shampoo which is for dogs with a black coat. Shampoos that are created to make black coats shine will remove any dingyess in a white coat, including to help reduce yellowing. It really makes the white of his coat “pop”. Don’t be afraid to mix different pet shampoos. Also, none of the Shed-Less shampoos or tools work. Don’t ruin your Huskies coat by using the furminator or anything like that on him.
Thank you to those who wrote “don’t bathe frequently”! Any book on Siberian Huskies (and other northern breeds) or a quick search on line will show you huskies shouldn’t be bathed more than twice a year. Certainly you CAN, but you’ll find that if you have your husky/mal groomed/bathed regularly, you will need to continue, because they will get dirtier and their coat mat more often as a result (that’s because the natural oils have been diminished). We never had our dogs groomed, then had one with one of those real fluffy coats, and age is making it harder for me to brush her often enough, so we had her groomed. She was so beautiful, we did it again…soon found that she got dirty/more matted FASTER than she ever did before being groomed regularly. So we stopped; her coat is returning to normal. Brushing, yes, but bathing frequently: NO! It’s not about “skin problems” you can see, it’s about affecting their natural oils.
hi, i have an alaskan malamute, who has been bathed a few times, and i can say he doesnt have any problems with his skin at all!!. I use an aloe vera dog shampoo on him, as it is kind enough for his skin, and helps him smell nice to, Also regular grooming, and a good diet will help keep his coat in good condition.

simply NONE it will harm his skin, dogs have few pores so when you shampoo their skin oils away they have nothing to retain skin elasticity the skin dries out and you will then have a problem. If you bathe a dog more than twice in a year you are asking for problems. Your dog should be cleaned with a brush if its extreme soiling a wet towel with no shampoo, for the dogs six monthly bathing use a reputable dog shampoo. NOTHING OTHER!
