What exactly is the “ath” position in football?

I often see college football players being recruited under the designation "Ath" (short for Athlete). Does this mean they are recruited without a predetermined position, leaving the team to decide their role later? It feels unusual that a recruit wouldn’t already be chosen for a specific position.

Does this mean they are just recruited and the team as yet to determine the position they will play? It seems strange that the recruit is not chosen for a specific position.

Hey im an Arsenal supporter, and you are not buying football. Youve posted like 3 times saying the exact same thing, settle, it’ll be fine. Anyway, the money doesn’t seem to be put to good use. I think the problem is, when Chelsea got alot of money instantly and started buying alot of players, suddenly alot of people starte4d following them, jumping on the banwagon. This probably annoys most people more thann anything, plus that Chelsea didnt really do anything prior to Abramavic taking over. But not every1 is saying that, stop posting stuff like this, you will only get more insults.

Ath stands for athlete. It means they have played multiple positions at high school level, and have played those positions successfully. Athletes are highly sought after by most colleges because of their flexibility, and the football program uses only 1 scholarship to get a guy that can play multiple positions(more bang for the buck). However in college, athletes tend to play the one position.

It means they can play many positions……..

It’s sort of like what Wes Welker is……….he’s a WR, Punt Returner, blocker, etc.
