what happens when you put the wrong oil in your car?

I have a 1997 Mazda 626 with 150,000 miles on it. I accidentally added 5W-30 oil when it requires 10W-30 oil. Will this harm my engine if I don't change it immediately? I'm considering waiting until next weekend to change it, but I'll be driving approximately 100 miles in that time, commuting 20 miles each day. I live in Los Angeles, CA. I appreciate any advice you can provide. Thank you!

I have my own oil shop and no it’s not bad the numbers are just the weight of the oil and since u have alot of miles on your car it’s best to use maxlife it’s for cars with alot of mileage on it that’s what I use on my truck..and your car will be fine

No, it will be fine and you can safely leave it in until the next oil change is due. There is no need to change it. When a maker recommends a particular grade of oil it is, presumably, because that was the grade that they found suited a particular engine the best. That does not mean that other oils are bad for it. On a 6 year old Mazda a change of 1 grade will not matter an iota.

Petroleum based oil is definitely not a good choice but you don’t need to worry until your next oil change. Just remember to keep some that’s left over for when you need to add a bit between oil changes.

According to the mobil1 website, both Mazda engines in the 1997 4 and V-6 engines in a 626 are supposed to have 5W-30 in the crankcase year round.
