The Webster dictionary defines Policing as

1.The use of or military civil force of a national or local government, responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and the maintenance of public order

2.To regulate, control, or keep in order by or as if by means of a police or military force.

3.An organization engaged in the enforcement of official regulations in a specified domain.

Some people see the U.S. as acting as the world police because it always tries to go fight in other countries and establish governments that favor their own political system. George Friedman states how the U.S. navy secured control of the world’ oceans and seas after World War 2 and is always monitoring and governing the control of ships, always possessing the right to allow, stop, or even sink any ship they want.

The U.S. is the largest and most influential power in the world and has military alliances or protectorate mandates with almost evey country in the world, it has 737 military bases in 36 nations that can project a massive and very influential amount of military strength, and The U.S. has a foreign policy that branches out and reaches all over the world.

A couple of court cases: Miranda v. Arizona (Miranda rights) Terry v. Ohio (pat searches) I don’t know how far back you are going, but: 4th Amendment (basis for all search and seizure law) and no specific case with this, but the incorporation of video cameras into every day police use (cruisers, crime scenes, and citizens filming events) has been huge.
