Where are you from?

Because if you drive up to Vermont or New York…like to Plattsburgh or Burlington…you know that Montreal is about 1-2 hours drive form those places?…so if you go there by car….you should just continue to drive…We sometimes go shopping for the afternoon in those places…because it’s so close…

I say that if you can get to New York City or Boston then take a plane to Montreal…closer than that, you should just continue to drive!

Good Luck!

Your Question seems to have confused some Answerers (me too!) as to WHY you want to go to the closest American city to fly to Montréal.

Anyway, Champlain is a town, not a city. Scheduled plane service between Montreal and Burlington but as AllpineAll suggests a lot of Montrealers will fly from Burlington because it is cheaper (as Plattsburgh International Airport will also be when it opens in a few months). Plattsburgh is indeed the closest – but very small – city but other than some malls there is no there there. St Albans, VT, also a very small city, is the closest nice American city, just a couple of miles longer from Montreal. Burlington is still small but larger and worth a visit in its own right

(very sophisticated and much preserved, with 4 universities). The nearest American city with air service to Montreal is currently Manchester, NH, followed by Boston and New York.

I think that this place is a little too far east in the city. Try something a little more Central, there is a Hotel on Mountain street and a Maritime Holiday Inn on Guy and Rene Levesque. There are so many excellent restaurants in Montreal it’s hard to single out one that is better than the other. Ethnic Food is in abundance in Montreal. Try going on the Tourism Montreal website and there is more than enough information to meet your needs. Try a tour of Old Montreal in a "Calesh ride" that will be fun.

Burlington, VT and Plattsburgh, NY are right across the border and about 90 minute drive from downtown Montreal. The closest big american city is NYC but a 6 hour drive away.

Hi – My husband and I lived at this address last year from April to Sept when he was there with his company. It was clean and being remodeled while we were there. Note: I would suggest not walking East or North from this area at night. We walked all over the city from the hotel. If you head down the hill, it is a quick trip to Old Montreal. An inexpensive place to eat there is L’usine de Spaghetti Parisienne on rue St. Paul. Across the street from the hotel is a good family restaurant Le Piemontais that has great sauces. You can see the gates to Chinatown from the steps of the hotel and there are plenty of good restaurants there. We had dim sum at Maison Kam Fung. The Complex DesJardin (shopping mall with a liquor store SAQ & grocery store IGA) is less than two blocks away with a connection to the Underground & the Place des Arts metro station. The metro is clean and safe. Get off at the McGill stop for shopping…or just walk up St. Catherine if the weather allows. One of our favorite restaurants is Weinstein & Gavino at 1434 Crescent…try the Osso Bucco. We aren’t really bar scene people & I don’t know your age to make recommendations regarding that. We liked going to various pubs & listening to live music. We watched sporting events on tv’s at 3 Brasserie and Peel Pub. Sharx Pool bar has glow in the dark bowling, pool tables, and a cool bar. One of our favorite spots was the House of Jazz (reservations really help here). Hope this helps. Enjoy your stay…we LOVE that city!

If you’re talking major Urban city with an international airport than Boston would most likley be the closest city to Montréal….after that probably New York City.

If you’re talking about any old hicktown…there are a bunch of them right along the border to Canada…which would make it kinda pointless to fly into Montréal if you’re driving up to the hicktown…when it’s less than an hour away from Montréal.

It won’t be cheaper to drive to that city and fly to Montreal, but Plattsburg NY is considered by Montrealers to be the closest actual city.

My sister is driving from Montreal to Burlington VT and flying from there to Costa Rica (I think, somewhere hot) which is apparently a much better deal than flying from Montreal. If THAT’s what you’re thinking of, Burlington.
