An armature photographer (not to be confused with "amateur" photographer) is one who takes advantage of the so-called photographic armatures. The best known of these is the Rule of Thirds, whereby we are taught to place important elements at or near the points where lines dividing the image into thirds vertically and horizontally would intersect. Following this rule alone, however, does not make one an armature photographer. There are other important armatures which help the composition of the photo, such as the diagonals from corner to corner, the lines from halfway points on the vertical edges to the halfway points on the horizontal, lines from the halfway point to the corners, and the lines from the one-third points to the other one-third points, the corners, or the halfway points.
