what is this thing called “blank is to blank as blank is to blank?” like, cat is to mammal as hawk is to bird

What is the term for the analogy format expressed as “blank is to blank as blank is to blank”? For example, "cat is to mammal as hawk is to bird." Additionally, what symbols are typically used in this format? Here’s another example: "bagel is to cream cheese as chip is to salsa."

i'm super late to the party, but i'd like to point out to anyone coming even later... the symbol " : " is a colon. The symbol " ; " is a semicolon.

Colons are used for these analogies.

These are analogies. They are on my English Vocab tests ALL the time. Sometimes Semi-colons (:) are used to separate the words. Hope this helps! :]]]

no, it is not an analogy. an analogy is a similarity between like features or components of two things. for example: a heart and a pump... the heart is called a pump in many circumstances because it easily describes the function of the heart. it's an analogy!

the term you are looking for is "word association". such as a cat is associated with mammals and a bird is associated with birds.

It's called an analogy! The symbols generally used for vocab testing are semicolons.

_______ :: _______ as _______ :: _______

:: = is to
