What was the original intent of a captive bedroom?
Can anyone provide details on the original intent of a captive bedroom, which is defined as a bedroom that can only be accessed through another room rather than a hallway? Was the original purpose of such a design intended for use as a sitting room, nursery, or library, or was it simply an inconvenient bedroom? I find it hard to believe that it was designed with inconvenience in mind, but I am open to different perspectives. What might have motivated a builder or architect to create a space like this? If you have insights or answers, please share your sources.

I think it was poor designing. I have lived in some houses like that and they were older houses. Maybe they didnt want to waste square footage on a hallway.
There is also the long-forgotten "dressing room" that today, is incorporated into the closet, but at one time, was actually a separate room where large gowns and other clothing (when women used to change clothes up to 6 times per day, depending on the occasion) were laid out, and women often had assistance to dress.
A friend of mine owns such a house where three of the bedrooms also have an additional bedroom that can only be accessed like that. Wonderful home feature.
This is called functional obsolescence and its a form of depreciation and can greatly affect the value of your home. Its mostly found in older homes. Bedrooms & bathrooms off kitchens, you have to walk through one bedroom to get to the next, ect. Im not sure why anyone would build a home like that, but there is a lot of them out there.
I can only speak about northern NM so; here all they did was add a room to the house next to their bedroom when a new born was born then another one next to it when the next one was born and the parents moved to the room they had added previously to and move the older sibling to the room originally occupied by the parents and on and on as new additions came into the family. One big long house room to room without hall ways. Talk about privacy
