8 mm or 30-06 springfield which is stronger?

Which cartridge is stronger: the 8 mm or the .30-06 Springfield? Additionally, could you provide information about various types of ammunition for each?

They are roughly equivalent, particularly at reasonable hunting ranges. In fact, the development of the 8mm cartridge and the rifles that chambered it were the inspiration for the American .30-06 and the 1903 Springfield.

Meaningful comparison requires similar bullets. The standard German projectile in World War II was a boattail design of about 198 grains. Its ballistics were superior to the most common .30-06 projectile, a 150-grain flatbase design. The U.S. had developed the .30-caliber M1 cartridge between the world wars, but reverted to the lighter flatbase bullets in the late 1930s because the 173-grain bullet in the M1 cartridge was hard on the newly adopted M1 rifle and because the more than 5,500-yard range of the 173-grain loads exceeded the safety zones of many Army and National Guard rifle ranges.

The ballistics of the .30-caliber with the 173-grain bullet and the 8mm with the 198-grain bullet are similar. According to my copy of Hatcher’s Notebook by Maj. Gen Julian S. Hatcher, the .30-caliber M1 had a drop of 12.3 feet at 1,000 yards (vs more than 15 feet for the 150-grain version). I regret that I have no reference for the 8mm Mauser, but memory says the figure is similar, probably slightly better. Perhaps someone in Yahoo-land has the figures for the 8mm.

Comparative “stronger” isn’t really the measurement of ballistic effectiveness but: the 30-06 in same or near same weight (170 grains in the Hodgdon’s manual) is nearly 500 feet per second faster, but because the 8mm normally uses a heavier bullet they get much closer at 200 grains,so there isn’t a real direct comparison. Both would be equally effect on same game animals, but using a 30-06 with a 165 grain bullet would extend range and still retain velocity and energy beyond the range of the 8mm,but not by a great deal. The equations for energy and foot / pounds give advantage to speed more than mass,so the edge goes to the 30-06 even at 200 grains(compare tables below);you can also see the 30-06 has advantages at the lower near the 165-170 grain range that can be near 500 f/lbs.

Bullet design would be the deciding factor for me at least,30-06 comes in a much more wide range of shapes and weights, and can have some very impressive Ballistic Coefficient numbers, while the 8mm doesn’t have those numbers till the weights drop the velocity way down.

My list.. 1) .30-06 I think this round impacted the world more then any other round it has been the defender of freedom and the bringer of food to families in the US for over a 100 years. The greatest innovation in the history of battle rifles helped win WWII if the M1 Garand had not been chambered in .30-06 the rifle may not have been the success it was. Not to mention the M1919 Browning Machine gun also chambered for .30-06 2) .45 ACP Whether you used it in the venerable Thompson Sub Machine Gun or the M1911 you had enough gun to do the job. When the Army could not stop attackers with the .38 they opted for the .45 after over a 100 years of service the .45 ACP is still going strong, and probably will for another hundred years. It is a slow fat bully of a round that hits as hard as mule on steroids. 3) 7.92×33 mm Kurz. shorter version of the German standard 7.92x57mm Mauser rifle round. Even though this round did not change the course of the war for the Third Reich it did change the face of modern combat. It allowed the design of the STG 44 or Sturmgewehr 44 or “assault rifle model 1944” to come to fruition…it was the basis for the worlds first assault rifle and without it we may never have seen the AK47 while not being directly related the two assault rifles are similar in many way. 4) 7.62×39 I list this round because who can forget the round and assault rifle that has been such a thorn in the side for the United States for over 60 years. The AK47 and the 7.62×39 have been in the hands of every “freedom fighter”, terrorist and gun enthusiast around the world. Due mostly to the reliability of the AK47 the 7.62x39mm round is here to stay. 5) 5.56 Nato or .223 Whether your hunting VC in the Mekong Delta, Osama Bin Laden in the Korangal Valley, or destroying the Army of the undead you can’t go wrong with the venerable 5.56mm with great range and accuracy the only thin it lacks is stopping power…good thing that due to it’s light weight you can carry an *** load of them trust me I know this from experience. It has been in service since the 1960’s and despite the arrival of the 6.8mm AR platforms it will remain in the business for many years to come. 6) .45 Long Colt I can’t talk about .45 ACP with out mentioning it’s grand-daddy. From the plains to the jungles of Panama and throughout Mexico and South America the .45 LC changed the way men defended themselves forever. They say that God made men, but Sam Colt made men equal. 7) .50 BMG you can’t talk about ammo without talking about the big boy on the battle field. Like it’s smaller cousin the .30-06 it was a mainstay in two world wars and continues to destroy everything it hits. The M2 Browning heavy machine gun is the ultimate man stopper. In the sky over Germany it destroyed the Luftwaffe, on the ground in every war since WWI it has layed waste to man and machine. Now with the birth of the Barret in the 80’s it has become the ATT&T of the battle field. 8) .303 Enfield no other rifle served it’s master for longer than the .303 Enfield the .303 is a hard hitting accurate to over 800 meters and paired with the Enfield was unstoppable even in the Faulklands it was just as dangerous in the hands of a British soldier as a modern day assault rifle. A well trained soldier could fire 30 well aimed shots in 60 seconds it was called the “MAD MINUTE” and no other bolt gun came close not even 1903A1 Springfield. Truly a remarkable round in a remarkable rifle. 9) .44 Magnum once the most powerful handgun in the world it is now often forgotten because of the .500 S&W and the .50 AE, but when it comes down to it I would rather have the .44 any day over either of the other two. It is still very powerful and much more easy to handle then the .500 or .50 AE and besides Dirty Harry never carried the .500 did he? and it will still blow your head clean off. 10) .700 Nitro Express 1,000 gr (65 g) SP 2,000 ft/s (610 m/s) 8,900 ft·lbf (12,100 J) the worlds most powerful shoulder fired rifle that I have ever heard of or fired I fractured my clavicle when I fired it five rounds later I was in allot of pain. It hurt bad really really bad, and I have stood and shoulder fired a Barret I never dreamed that a rifle could be that powerful I am no small dude either. So that is my list hope I didn’t put anyone to sleep.

The 30-06 can be handloaded to a Maximum speed in muzzle velocity of 3,006 from a 26 inch barrel shooting a 180 grain bullet.* The 8mm Mauser cannot reach or even come close to matching that kind of performance from the 30-06.*

In my opinion, both cartridges fulfill the same role. They’re good for hunting and good for anti-personnel missions.

While the ballistics between the two cartridges differ, due to different muzzle velocities and bullet weights, their effective ranges are about equal. Since a hunter is expected to get as close to a game animal as is possible, either cartridge will perform well (when using the proper bullet type for the situation).

The target won’t notice the difference.

8mm has more knock down power up close, but 30-06 has more reach with more than enuff take down power. Most sniper’s before the 50 cal came out used the 30-06 or 308.

I just wouldn’t suggest those silver tip 30-06, unless they isn’t a blade of grass or a nat inbetween you and your target.

The 30-06 is a more stable and proven round. I’m not that familiar with the 8mm.
