An ionic bond involves a metal that exchanges electrons with a nonmetal.

The ions move freely in water and carry electric charges.

F (not Group I metal)

ionic bonds always take place between a metal and nonmetal. metals usually give up electrons and nonmetals usually accept electrons. it is called an ionic bond because when an element gives up or accepts electrons it gains either a positive or negative charge, respectively. just think of positive and negative charges attracting to one another, thats really all an ionic bond is. look at the “octet rule”, this explains why elements want to gain or lose electrons… to become stable.
