a century means 100, we are in 21st century, it means 2100 but we are in 2010?
I’m confused about how centuries are counted. If a century means 100 years, and we are currently in the 21st century, why does that imply it ends in 2100 instead of 2010? For example, when I refer to the 19th century, I understand it as the time period from 1800 to 1899. Can someone explain why the 21st century is different?

It’s like being in the first year of your life. You are in it but you have not reached the age of one. So we are in the 21st century but we have not reached the age of 2100. There was a big debate on when this Millenium started. Some say it was 2000 because the first number changed. Some said it was 2001, as you had to complete a thousand before you could start another.
no, if you say 19th century, it’s the 1800s. we are in the 21st century right now, in the 2000s. it seems like the number of the century should be the same as the first two numbers in the actual year, but it does not. and it’s because the 1st century (B.C.) was from 0 – 100. that means from 101-200 was the 2nd century. and that’s why the number of the century doesn’t match the year. and it never will. hopefully that makes sense.

Yeah, think about it, the first year was year 1 and it was the First Century. You add 1 to every succeeding century, so that is how the 21st century is 2 zero 10
I’ll try to explain, it’s really confusing at first glance, but makes sense eventually. The 1st century was from the year 0 through the year 99. Once you reach 100 you’re actually starting the 2nd century because the 2nd set of 100 year periods is starting. So the 19th century is from 1800 through 1899. The year 2100 will be the first year of the 22nd century.
Hope that clears it up.
A century is generally considered to be the years **00 to **99.
So the 19th century is generally considered to be from 1800 to 1899, the 20th century from 1900 to 1999 and the 21st century from 2000 to 2099.
Technically, the first century AD began as the year 0, in the same way a child is 0 at birth and 1 at the end of the first year.
It’s hypothetical really, as it was only later that the division between BC and AD was established.
But the 1st century, which is the first 100 years, ended in 99, the second in 199, the 19th in 1899, the 20th in 1999 and the 21st century will end in 2099.
That explains why the year 2000 was taken to be the beginning of the new millenium there were 2000 years before it (AD).
So on this matter, I don’t agree with Stephen, whose answers are generally to be admired.
Think of it this way, the years 0-99 was the 1st century. Therefore, years 100-199 was the 2nd century. It continues on–years 1500 thru 1599 was the 16th century…and the years 2000 thru 2099 will be the 21st century. Years 2100 thru 2199 will be the 22nd century, and so on.

Because that’s not how you count the centuries. For each century, you take the first two numbers of a year, so let’s say now we’re in 2010, so take 20 and add 1 so you get 21st century. It’s the same with all the years, for example 1877, you take 18 and add 1 and you get 17th century. ;D I hope that helps. :] xx
