Why does my ankle keep randomly giving out?

I've been experiencing a concerning issue with my ankle for the past couple of months. Despite trying various remedies, including wearing a medium support brace, stretching, exercising, and soaking it in the bathtub, the situation seems to be deteriorating. My ankle randomly gives out while I'm walking, and it happens particularly when I navigate stairs. This sudden weakness is alarming, as it nearly causes me to fall. Additionally, I've always had a tendency to walk on the sides of my feet throughout my life, and I wonder if this has contributed to the current problem. Is it possible that I might be facing a more serious issue due to my gait? Who should I consult to help identify and address this problem, as my general family doctor hasn't been very helpful?

Hi Danielle, firstly I would get some shoes like runners to wear when you are at home because you can tighten these up and you will have less pronation….rolling. Then I would go to the podiatrist…you will need some orthodics fitted to your shoe which will also help to stop the pronation. By doing this you will rectify the way you walk. Your back has probably changed the way it sits because you have been walking like this.

The reason that your ankle gives out is that you have week tendons around the ankle, I know, I am double jointed in the ankles and mine twist everywhere. and walking down stairs puts a lot of pressure on your ankles and feet as well.

Firstly you need to strengthen…not stretch it,,,it is already stretched. Go to a gym if you can and do leg weight and squats and this sort of thing….ask the trainers at the gym, if not buy some ankle weights and see if these helps.

Instead of a sports brace, because this is flexible, I would use strapping tape style of tape and this has no stretch and will hold your foot properly.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I’ve never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I’ve been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can’t imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy’s football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I’ve had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I’m just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
