Why does my hamsters wee smell so bad???!!?

My hamster is 19 months old now and I have noticed with age his wee is getting stronger and smellier!As well as his usual weekly clean, I have to clean his wee spot out every few days, I use carefrsh and even that does not mask the smell!He is happy, healthy and has a clean bill of health from the vet. To all you owners of older hamsters out there, did you notice this change with age?

That’s a male hamster thing. LOL As they mature they tend to get a bit smellier. If it bothers you, stay with a female next time, they don’t smell as much. It’s a musk from the males that causes it. All my breeder males smelled alot more, even though I kept their cages much cleaner because of it. You can try different beddings to see which one works best with your hamster, but I usually recommend pine shavings. You may also clean out the container he’s in as well, he is probably rubbing his “scent” on the sides of it and so that’s going to add to the smell.But yes, it’s normal and healthy for a male. 🙂

i agree with the poster suggesting a hamster litter tray. hamsters are pretty smart and clean and can be litter trained in a day 🙂 then clean the litter tray out every dayalso are you giving your hamster fresh vegetables? too much fresh food can cause urine to smell much worse. hamsters need very little fresh foods.also as your hamster is older he might have diabetes. drinking more and pungent urine may be symptoms. it’s quite hard to spot in smaller animals, but cut out any naughty treats (i know how much hammies enjoy choc drops 🙂 ) and seek advice from your vet.maybe join a hamster forum on the web

most male rodents have a very strong urine smell. i know my mouse sure did! maybe you can try getting a hamster litter pan. they have them at most major pet stores and they even have litter for it. you attach it to a corner of the cage. place your hamster in it a few times, and once he gets used to it and what it’s for, then clean that out every day. good luck!

yeah my hamsters wee smells aswell i find cleaing the area were it tends to wee the most everydai hepls ……yes they are obviously goin to still be happy and healthy urinating is normal just like we do if we left pissy knickers on the floor after a few dais it would smell aswell….. just try wiping or cleaning it out everyday or 2 ! expecailly the areas were it wee’s . Good Luck !!
