Why is ラーメン written in katakana? Is it a borrowed word?

it is strange that it would be written in katakana, and yet still have kanji (拉麺), but I think this is due to the fact that ラーメン was originally from china. So it is foreign.... Show More

It’s usually written ラーメン in Katakana and らーめん in Hiragana because they are Japanese-style 拉麺 and no one wants to write the complicated kanji with lots of strokes on signs etc. – it’s the same reason as why トヨタ, ホンダ, ヤマハ etc are written in Katanaka.... Show More

The reason it’s written it katakana is because ramen originally comes from China. That’s also the reason that it also has a kanji, but the kanji is only used in Chinese.... Show More
