Are bell pepper seeds poisonous?
I know this might sound a bit strange, but are bell pepper seeds poisonous? My mom has always told me that the seeds inside red, yellow, and green peppers are toxic, so she insists that I remove them all. I really don't believe they are harmful, and my grandmother (her mom) agrees with me. Since this belief seems to have been passed down, I have my doubts about its accuracy. I've even told my mom that I plan to eat one with the seeds to prove her wrong, or leave a pepper with seeds in a salad to see if anyone has any adverse reactions! Please tell me that the seeds are safe to eat, so I can share a laugh with my mom! Thanks! 🙂

No the seeds are not poisonous. They are, however, very bitter (as is the pith). But, apart from being bitter, they are not poisonous.
I am sure everyone has eaten a stray seed or two in food and we are all here to tell the tale, no ill effects. Also, if they were badly poisonous, there would at least be a warning on packs of peppers (or they would be removed before sale). Or they would not sell peppers as a fruit full stop!

Ok, I know I sound really strange asking this... but are bell pepper seeds poisonous? My mum has always told me that the seeds inside a red/yellow/green pepper are poisonous, so she makes me take them all out. I really don't think they are, and my Granny (her mum) says that too, and she's a...
Don't laugh at your Mum it's rude love. That said these seeds are safe to eat & i eat them every time i have a bell pepper. Misinformation get passed down that's all so please be kind to your Mum on this one. Like you i had wondered if eating these seeds were safe & had always binned them then i did a Google search a number of years back & read they were safe to eat & have eaten them ever since
I have never heard that. I have eaten lots in my lifetime. If the seeds were poisonous, shops would not be allowed to sell them and people would be dying all over the place.

We give the seeds to our gerbil and she loves them! Glad to hear they are ok for people too!
