Are grapes dangerous for rabbits?

Are grapes dangerous for rabbits? My rabbit seems to love them, but since I give them as treats, he eats them quickly and often runs away with them. I typically give him around 10 seedless grapes at a time. Is this safe for him?

It’s nice to see a rabbit all happy & excited about some kind of food or another. I feel that 10 grapes at a time might be a little too much. I personally would not give ours more than 3 at most. This is not even daily, but rather a like weekly thing.

Too much of a good thing (sweet, sugary, people-yummy fruit) is too easily lethal to a rabbit. It can easily develop into a feeding habit that the rabbit’s body wasn’t really designed for.

I (sadly) learned this the hard way.

Better to err on the side of caution in this case.

Hey, that’s really funny! I give my rabbit grapes as well, and he gets really excited and runs around the room with it also. Now I don’t know if they are good for him, but I am sure it is not too bad as long as you don’t give them too many. I think 10 is far too many, as rabbits are supposed to have only a very small amount when it comes to treats, and grapes are very sweet. A few should be okay though, I am sure.

He’s like a kid with a piece of candy. If he doesn’t get it very often he’s going to gobble it down greedily. I just gave my rabbit some grapes yesterday. He loves them. I’ve had my rabbit for over a year and have never had a problem with grapes. 10 sounds like too much at a time though. They are high in sugar/calories. You don’t want him to get fat. I would cut it down to about 4 grapes.

grapes are a good treat but should be fed in VERY limited amounts. rabbits should get sugary fruit treats no more than 3 times a week. each time, they should not get more than a half grape (bunny under 5 pounds) or whole grape (bunny over 5 pounds). as you know, the most important part of their diet is hay and veggies. feeding too many treats may make them avoid the food they need to stay healthy.

other good treats are 2 raisins a day or a couple tiny slivers of carrot (also known as matchstick carrots). a whole baby carrot is too much for a bunny, carrots are way too high in sugar. at most, they can have a quarter of a baby carrot three times a week.

rabbits like herbs as treats too, and they are much healthier, so you can try some parsley, cilantro, mint, rosemary, basil…

hope this helps!

Grapes are not a safe treat for rabbits! Grapes have many chemicals sprayed on them to keep away pests and molds and other things while they are growing. The rabbits ingest the chemicals along with the grapes and it can build up in their systems and cause kidney damage and even failure.

This can also happen in dogs so never feed grapes to them either.

Raisins are even worse than grapes because as the grape dries into a raisin the chemicals become concentrated and the levels higher.

Skip the grapes and find some other treat for your pet.

That seems a little much.

Grapes are a safe treat, but rabbits should only have 3 ounces of fruit a day. Too much sugar is hard on them.

yeah.

they’re protein.

I give my rabbits grapes as well.

My vet suggested it.

They are ok in small amounts as a treat. You should feed primarily hay and veggies then limited plain pellets.
