Army Reserves vs. Active Duty?

My boyfriend has been talking about joining the army reserves or National Guard. I just wanted to know what is the difference between army reserves or National Guard compared to active duty?

It depends on what your boyfriend is looking to get out of his military service. The National Guard (state run military) and Reserves (Federal) are part-time options that would allow him to pursue his education, work a full-time job, ect and still serve in the military. His duty requirements would be 1 weekend per month, and 2 weeks in the summer after he completes his initial entry training (Basic, and Advanced training)The Active Duty is a full time job/career. The biggest difference fall in the benefits category. Full time work = full benefits. Medical and dental insurance is free, 30 days paid vacation, housing, food, and college benefits. @ Angie – I have served both in the National Guard and Active Army for a combined 18 years. I had a job with the Guard, but found a CAREER in the Active Army. Not for one minute have I felt that the Army “owns” me. That’s really all I have to say about that – now pardon me, it’s 1400 (2 o’clock PM) and I’m going to take my Harley out for a nice long ride!

Well, as far as Reserves vs. National Guard, the National Guard has more benefits (because you get state benefits as well as federal benefits), promotions tend to be a bit easier, and there are more jobs available (because the Reserves don’t have combat jobs).The difference between those two and Active Duty is that Active Duty soldiers have a full time job whereas National Guard and Reservists only work (and only get paid for) one weekend per month. This leaves time to have another job, family, and education, but they both get deployed just like Active Duty.

Active duty is when you enroll full-time. Both require basic training. Both can ask you to deploy but the reservist can refuse a tour where someone in the Regular may not Red DAGG more than twice, then they’ll be released. If you go in the Reserve you have different contracts (or terms of service) Coul be A or B Reservist. One you have a full-time job, but you are 9 to 5 and unlike the Regular who are on 24/7 call. It is all dependent on what you want out of the experience. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.

Active duty: You get deployed to Afghanistan National Guard: You deal with problems at home and sometimes if they need you they will ship you off to Afghanistan. However, let’s say another bad hurricane hits Louisiana, like twice as strong as Katrina, you most likely would be deployed over there to help with Casualties, passing out supplies, helping families, evacuating them, so on, so on.
