Calculate the mass in grams of $700 billion worth of gold.?
In 2009, one of the U.S. government’s bailout packages amounted to $700 billion, at a time when gold was valued at $800 per ounce (or $28.20 per gram).
- Calculate the mass, in grams, of $700 billion worth of gold.
- If this quantity of gold were shaped into a cube, what would be the length of each side?

I’m using the American billion… Since you used $
Therefore 700 Billion dollars = 70 x 10^10
Therefore (70 x 10^10)/28.80 = 2.4822…. x 10^10 grams
The density of Gold (sourced from wikipedia) is 19.30 grams per cm^3
Therefore since density = mass/volume
Volume = mass/density
Therefore volume = (2.4822…. x 10^10)/19.3 = 1286150002 cm^3
Therefore one side of the cube would be the cube root of 1286150002 which is 35862.93354 cm or simply 360 metres to 3 sig fig.
1. Divide $700 billion by $28.20.
2. For this, you need to know the density of gold, in grams per cubic centimeter (google it). Then you can get the volume of the hypothetical cube as:
Volume (in cubic centimeters) = (number of grams) / density
(You got the “number of grams” part in question #1).
Now if you have a cube with a known volume, its side equals:
length of side = cube root of volume. (use a calculator)
If the volume is in “cubic centimeters”, the length will come out in “centimeters”.
