Can hamsters eat bird food instead of hamster food?
I have a large bag of bird food that appears quite similar to hamster food. Can hamsters obtain all the necessary nutrients from bird food, or is it essential for them to stick exclusively to their designated food?

I dont believe they can get all of their nutrition from it but i know that rodents do enjoy eating bird seed alot. If your worried they wont get enough nutrition from just bird seed at petco or petsmart they have hamster, rat, and just rodent nutrition liquid that you add to their water to make sure they get all of the healthy stuff they need.

I have a huge bag of bird food and it's very similar to hamster food. Can hamsters get all the nutrients they need from eating bird food?
For a one off yes they can eat it, BUT hamster food is specially designed to give your hamster all the key nutrients they need in the correct amounts.
Bird food will not contain all of these nutrients.
If it is for a one off you’re better just getting some nuts, veggies and fruit and give your hamster a treat.
I would not advise giving a hamster bird food as a substitute for hamster food.

Hello!!! Hamsters will eat almost anything you offer them, but be careful as to what you do give them. The hamster’s diet consists of high fiber, and low fat foods. Bear this in mind when you come to feed him. Fruit can be fed, but in small quantities only, as fruit contains natural sugars (fructose) very fattening, and too much will cause diarrhea. Do not feed anything that has been processed for human beings, (too much salt, sugar, additives) No red meat in any forms at all, cooked or uncooked. That goes for dog food and cat food (tins or not) No green leaf vegetables, this includes cabbage and lettuce. Hamsters are rodents, and are mainly herbivores; keep his diet as natural as possible. A complete hamster mix, in a good branded name, this is the base of his diet, and will provide him with all the nutrients he needs. There are many types of hamster mixes available on the market, but a good quality one should be considered, these are pretty well balanced. The cheaper brands are mostly just fillers and are unsuitable. This can be supplemented with selected human food. Such as cнιcκen, (though not many will eat this), tuna fish, cheese, especially cottage cheese, cereals, (no sugared cereals) unsweetened yoghurt, fresh vegetables, i.e. carrots, cucumber small amounts, “no” potatoes, I could go on all day naming them, but some veggies are not for hamsters please check first. It is wise also that you do not feed him other foods that have been made up for other animal i.e. rats, mice, rabbits etc: they are different compositions. No yeast produces, g ɾąքҽ s or raisins.
There is a reason they call it BIRD food instead of HAMSTER food. Dont know if you’ve noticed but there is a big difference between birds and hamsters!
