Ask, can you have ‘half’ of one, or can the number involve fractions? If yes, continuous, if no, discrete.Number of hotels – discrete (can’t have half a hotel).Temperature – continuous – 25.4 degrees is perfectly possible.Earlobe – discrete – only two choices and can’t be ‘half-attached’. Songs performed – again, not much sense talking of half a song performed (or 0.2 of one etc), so discrete.
