denotes one particle of a given substance for every 99 other particles

One part of anything usually judged by 100 parts of an equal size! Parts per hundred is a large percentage. Most toxins are are measured in parts per million. For example 2 parts per hundred of red dye in water would be 100 drops of water combined with to drops of the red dye!

Parts per hundred can be hundredths or percent, yes.

it’s the total number of parts of something dissolved in a hundred of the solvent. same as % but used to describe very low concentration typically, which would be e.g. .0008%. It may sound easier to grasp if we say 0.8 parts per hundred?
