do cortisone shots hurt?
This week, I have to get a cortisone shot in my wrist due to gymnastics and cheerleading. I've been tumbling on concrete and hardwood gym floors, and lifting girls who are taller and heavier than I am. Can you provide me with some basic background on what to expect before, during, and after the shot in terms of pain? What does the doctor do during the procedure, and how often might I need to get these shots? I want to continue my cheerleading career into college, potentially with the UCA Staff or at the University of Oregon.

I have had numerous due to Rheumatoid Arthritis and never felt one. However as to how often you can get them? They limit them to 3 for the year and are not keen to go past the year. Therefore, if they work well and good, but if the problem is from cheer leading, then you might have to retire. Best of Luck
I’ve had them in my wrist and in the palm of my hand before (just under the finger) and let me tell you…the hand/wrist is the most painful place to get a cortisone shot! I don’t mean to scare you but my doctor has told me the same thing.
The good news is, they usually have a spray they use to numb the area before the shot. It helps a little bit, but it still hurts something awful! It only lasts a split second, though, and the relief you get from the shot is VERY much worth it!
For about an hour or so after you get the shot, your whole hand/wrist will be completely numb..kind of like when your foot falls asleep but it takes longer to wake up. Eventually it starts “waking up” and you get those tingles, but when it’s finished the problems you had that caused you to need the cortisone shot feel SO much better.
Basically the cortisone shot is used to provide immediate reduction in inflammed tissue (usually tendons/ligaments around a joint). Since the inflammation is causing pain, the reduction in the swelling causes the pain to dissipate.
You can’t have more than 2-3 cortisone shots in the same location in a year. Doing this will cause the bone to break down, become brittle, and all kinds of bad things.

The pain level is going to depend on how your doctor does the injection . I’ve had cortisone shots that hurt like a mule kicked me and then I’ve also had cortisone shots where the doctor put in both a fast acting anesthetic and a slow release, long acting anesthetic in with the cortisone.
There will be a limit of how many shots they can give you since cortisone can damage cartillidge . So it will depend on how much cortisone they give you to determine how many injections over what time frame they can give.
Good luck,
Tex
It’s given to reduce inflammation in cases like arthritis. It usually work after a few days and the effects last up to weeks. The shot does hurt but it’s well tolerated. It can be performed with a very thin needle to cause little discomfort and in can be given with Anesthetic agents.
The common side effects after the shot is a Cortisone flare, where the injected cortisone crystallizes and can cause a brief period of pain worse than before the shot. It usually lasts a day or two and treated by placing ice in the area.
The frequency of the shot depends on your case, but doctors would want to limit the number of injections they offer as much as possible.

I have had 3 injections in my heel. The doctor draws up cortisone in the syringe and some lidocaine to numb you and it is injected into the inflammed area. I didn’t feel anything. You may feel some pain it depends on the area of injection. You may only need one shot if you follow the doctors directions for care afterwards.
If you wish to learn about the real character of sciatica or why sciatica is so common and what all these problems are attempting to inform to your body then you definitely need to learn this eBook Sciatica SOS from here https://tr.im/UQZ1L .
Glenn Johnson is the author of Sciatica SOS. He too was plagued by the illness for very quite a while in his early 40s. He says he was on the list of “Early viruses to be diagnosed with sciatica”, and he tried out a number of possible therapies that the doctors presented, but they never offered him acceptable results.
The eBook Sciatica SOS is distinctive; it goes the extra mile to help you realize the cause of the problem, what you are able to do to solve it and then gives detailed directions to see you succeed in the treatment.
All this is reached in 7 days or less. It is definitely worth a try.
I had my first one yesterday, in my knee. It hurt like hell when the medication was going in, and I normally have a very high tolerance for pain. But after waking up today, and my knee feeling great, it was well worth it!!
