Emile Renouf’s “The Helping Hand”?
I have a painting titled “The Helping Hand” by Emile Renouf, which has “Renouf 81” signed in the bottom left corner. It was given to me, and I am curious to know if it is a reproduction, and if so, what type it might be. The painting is mounted on a stiff board and framed in brown, with a smooth white cardboard-like paper covering the entire back of the frame. I have considered removing the backing to gather more information, but I am hesitant to do so for fear of diminishing its value. I do not notice any visible paint strokes, which leads me to believe it may not be an authentic piece. I would like to know what type of replica it is—could it be a regular mass-produced print or a Giclée print?

There are zillions of different types of reproduction. Is the above yours? If you had the original, then you would be a wealthy person, if you see what I mean. Yes, it will be a reproduction, but it’s impossible to say what type, as there have been many innovations in printing technology during the 20th century. I don’t think it’s a giclée prints, as those give a textured ‘painterly’ surface.
I have a print of “The Helping Hand” by Emile Renouf. It has been double matted and framed and the signature isn’t visible.
On the back of the print is written some stuff that I can’t decipher or has disappeared. There is a figure that could be a letter or number next to a 60 then a space that the lettering isn’t visible then a – 462. Underneath the numbers I can make out elpi a space then Hand. So I figure there was another H before the elpi and that ng would have followed that. I will try to write it out the way that I see it.
&60 – 462
elpi Hand
The & is the closest replica of the figure before the 60. I figure it is a print count but I don’t know what printing nor if it is 60 out of 462 or what it is.
Any help would be appreciated.
