What type of simple machine are falling dominos? Are they levers? I'm curious about the mechanics involved in this common physics demonstration. Thanks for your insights!

Yes, falling dominoes can be used as class three levers.

As seen in Rube Goldberg's project, when the first domino is struck, it tips forward, hitting the domino in front of it, which in turn hits the next one, and so on. These dominoes are classified as third-class levers because the fulcrum is at the bottom, the load is on top, and the effort is applied in the middle.

Simple machines are devices that can make a difficult task easier by enabling a person to apply less force or to apply force in a direction that is easier to manipulate.

There are six basic simple machines: lever, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, pulley, and screw.

A lever is a rigid bar that rests on a support called a fulcrum, which lifts or moves loads.
