How do I connect multiple ethernet jacks to a single cat5 cable?

I recently purchased a house that has Cat5 cables run to each room, but the jacks are not currently connected. Each room has two to three jacks located on different walls, but unfortunately, only one wire was installed per room. The Cat5 cables terminate at a panel where I plan to install a switch to connect the various rooms. I understand that I won’t be able to use all the jacks in the same room simultaneously; however, I would like to wire them all up in a way that minimizes future adjustments to the jacks. I attempted to punch down two wires into each slot on the jack, but that approach did not work. Do you have any suggestions or ideas on how to effectively connect multiple Ethernet jacks to a single Cat5 cable?

You cannot “daisy chain” ethernet signals from one jack to another. It is basically impossible if following proper wiring standards.

Whoever did this wiring in the walls had no idea of how ethernet wiring should be done, sorry to say…

That all said, in theory you could run a second two pair to a wiring closet and punch those two pairs down to another ethernet switch port. For example, wires on pins 1,2 and 3,6 are used for cat5 (and cat5e) wiring. Cat6 uses all 8 wires….

For cat5, you could run the pairs for pins 4,5 and 7,8 to and punch them to pins 1,2 and 3,6 on the switch, then run the signals to the south wall jack, and put them on the same pins 1,2 and 3,6. Only issue, is how to do this on the north wall side, you cannot punch them on the north wall jack, but could wire some jumper to the wires from the south wall area.

In simple English terms, cat5 and cat5e ethernet uses only 4 of the 8 wires, you can possibly use the remaining 4 wires to jumper to the south wall and at the switch, if you are careful with how you do the wiring…. If you do this, all ports will be NOT compatible with CAT6 any longer…

series NO

Parallel YES

if one wire per room and 2-3 jacks per room, WHERE are the jacks wired to??????

where does the ONE wire go????????

My assumption would be that they are already wired in parallel so if u connect the one wire u will be able to use any ONE of the jacks in that room.

if none of the jacks are connected then u must connect them in parallel to each other and the feed.

if u can’t punch 2 wires then use a short one and connect the others to it.

You will need something such as a switch or patch panel.
