How do you clean a pressing comb?
I've unfortunately allowed oil from my hair to accumulate on my pressing comb, and now it's caked onto the teeth and the most crucial parts of the comb. What are the best methods to effectively clean it and remove the buildup?

How do you clean a pressing comb?
I've unfortunately let the oil from my hair stick to the pressing comb, and now it's caked onto the teeth and the most important part of the comb. How do I get that stuff off?

i always used to get my hair pressed and i still press my moms and grandmas hair by the way both have hair past their shoulders, the old fashioned ones that go on the stove are best and because they just about last for life they never go on sale, but they are not as convenient, i would try to barrow a electric one to try it out, i didn't like it! but if you do get the stove one you should know your hair should be completely dry clean and oiled lightly ( away from the stove you could use spray oil or hair grease like dax) heat the comb on med and put 1 drop of water on it ,it is hot enough when it fizzes but then put the comb on a paper towel and it does not burn, section off small bit of hair about 1/4 inch thick and comb form root let back of comb rest on hair as you pull down the hair to ends. then use your next comb which has been heating (good to have 2).
u can take perm & apply 2 the comb. place in a bag & close 4 15-20 mins; run under hot water & take a stiff hair brush 2 help remove the build-up. u will have 2 do this several times depending on the amount of gunk. u can take any fine object to go between the teeth 2 help remove/break up gunk. Then place the metal portion of the comb in a hot baking soda solution for about one hour, rinse and dry.
With Heavy Duty Over Cleaner that contains lye. Here s how: Heat combs to make them warm but not hot, Spray and saturate teeth with heavy duty oven cleaner that has lye.(Lye is toxic. use gloves and mask, Best place to spray is in the basement wash tub) Let them sit over night then clean with hot soapy water and a hard bristle tooth brush. To thoroughly clean between teeth use unwaxed dental floss. Depending on how much build up is on the comb, you may have to repeat this process twice, but I guarantee this will remove all the oil build up. Give it a try.
That's some friend you've got. You should NOT use the oven for heating. If it's electric, it will be much more costly. If it's gas, it could KILL you. Use the space heater, and tell him/her that you'll gladly pay any overage on the bill -- then insist on viewing the previous AND future bills to confirm whatever spike there is. If you are paying rent there, you have every right to be comfortable. Regardless, you need to get out of there as soon as possible -- your friend is not cut out to be a landlord, nor does that basement sound like it's an ideal living space.
