How does parrots sleep?

I’m concerned about my parrot's sleeping habits. How do parrots sleep, and how much sleep do they typically need?

Parrots are truly sleeping when they tuck their face into their back feathers between their wings with one leg tucked up and their feathers are pouffed out. They can “rest” by closing their eyes and lifting up one leg but they’re not really in a true “deep” sleep.

With that said, parrots are very light sleepers so they need to have a relatively quiet and dark room. There’s a lot of controversy over covering vs. not covering the cage at night- I’ve had several birds in my life and currently have an African Grey and I’ve never covered a bird.

They need a lot of sleep to be healthy- about 10 hours. My bird gets more- I put her “to bed” by 8 pm and let her wind down, and I usually don’t give her breakfast until about 7:30 on the weekdays, a little later on the weekends.

I’m just worried about my parrot, how does it sleep and how much time does it take?

My parrot is a nutcase. You can do anything to him. He can sleep with light, Tv on or even music. He just dont care. Usually he pass out, and i mean it, he pass out at 10 pm regardless of place. His favorite place to sleep is my shoulder, but i dont let him sleep there often, as might hurt him in my sleep. Also his positioning depends on where he sleeps.

they put their head back on their back and use their own feathered back as a pillow and close their eyes. they can use up to 12 hours of sleep, although my poor cockatiel gets less and sleeps iin the daytime, which is bad for the bird. 9 hours is ok. they need total dark and quiet to sleep, althought they are able to get used to some soft noises, like key typing, they will not sleep trhough a TV or any variable noises because they are prey animals and need to be on alert for predators at night.

I used to have a quaker parrot that would turn his head around and put his beak nestled in his shoulder feathers. Sometimes he would stand on one foot. I’m pretty sure they close their eyes when they sleep.

Some birds sleep with their heads straight ahead, many sleep with it tucked in their back under their wing, on one leg.

They should get 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night.

Mine sleeps in a little fuzzy hut, sort of on its belly (with his head resting in front of him). (See the picture here: http://bestinflock.wordpress.com/2007/10/10/no-lon…

Parrots need 10-12 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
