The chaparral is characterized by sparse, rough terrain and nutrient-poor soil meaning that no single resource is overly abundant. Therefore, a varied diet allows an animal to make use of a wider selection of the resources that are available to it and thereby thrive.

The chaparral biome consists of various types of terrain like mountains and plains, it is somewhat similar to desert biome as both of them are hot and dry, but it experiences more rainfall as compared to desert biome. It consists of rough terrain and nutrient-poor soil, which show that not a single resources are abundant. It means there is a variety of diet present in this biome. So, the variation in the diet of the animal makes them able to survive and make use of various resources that are available nearby in order to survive.

Chaparral biome is made up majorly of infertile land and the climate of the biome is majorly hot and dry. Thus, the plant biodiversity in the biome is limited and some plants may not be available all the year through. Due to this fact, the animals living in the area have to survive by learning to eat whatever plant is available per season. If the animals are able to eat only one type of plant, they will suffer hunger and possibly death if that particular plant is no longer available. Therefore ability to eat different type of food is an adaptation for survival in the chaparral biome.
