How long ago is 1 million days? (What year?)?

How long ago is 1 million days? What year does that correspond to? Additionally, how long ago is 1 million hours, and what year does that represent? How about 1 million minutes—what date would that be? Lastly, how long ago is 1 million seconds, and what date does that indicate? Please provide the steps you used to calculate each of these timeframes, explaining your work and the reasoning behind each part of your calculations.

one million divided by 365 = how many years ago. so subtract answer from current year, correcting for b.c. which makes year numbering go backwards prior to 2,012 years ago. also must divide one million by 4 to correct for extra leap year day, in other words 1/4 of a million extra days for leap year, divide that also by 365 (number of days in a year) add that to the years before subtractiondivide 1000000 by the product of 24 by 365 for number of hours in a year, follow the above processagain, product of 60 (minutes in hour) 24 (hours in day) 365 (days in year)

again, product of 60 (seconds in minute) by the above product

1) 1,000,000 hours / 24 hours per day = 41666.67 days ago; 41666.67 days / 365.25 days per year = 114 years ago. 2012-114 = 18982) 1,000,000 minutes / 60 minutes per hour = 16666.67 hours ago; 16666.67 hours / 24 hours per day = 694 days ago; 694-366 (because 2012 is a leap year) = 1 year, 328 days ago. Instead of counting back 328 days, count back 2 years and add 37 days. It should be June 7, 20103) 1,000,000 seconds / 60 seconds per minute = 16666.67 minutes ago; 16666.67 minutes / 60 minutes per hour = 277.78 hours ago, 277.78 / 24 hours per day = 11.57 days ago; it should be April 19, 2012.Remember to round up when counting days. I hope that makes more sense to you now.

whenever converting, make railroad tracks (I don’t know why it’s called this; they look nothing like railroad tracks). Once you have the right conversions so you are left with the units you want, multiply the top numbers and divide by the bottom numbers.for the first one, we need to figure out how many years ago equals 1 million hours. So we’ll gradually work our way from hours to years using whatever conversions we know. Notice how the hours units and the days units cancel out, leaving year as the only remaining unit. 1 million hours | . 1 day . . . | . 1 year——————–|—————-|—————-. . . . .. . . . . . . .|. .24 hours. | .365 days1,000,000*1*1——————– years24 * 3651,000,000————- years8760114.15 years —we’re already .15 into the year 2012, so let’s ignore that fraction. So 2012 – 114 = 1898You can do the same thing for the other two problems. Just make sure that you aim for the “day” as the ending units. There are calendars that tell you which number “day” every date on the calendar is. Or just calculate it out—May 1 is day 122 of 2012 (don’t forget leap day)
