how many amps does a 60 watt light bulb draw?

How many amps does a 60-watt light bulb draw when connected to a standard electrical supply?

For a resistive load, which a light bulb essentially is, the power will equal the root-mean-square (RMS) current through the load times the RMS voltage. Household power circuits in the U.S. have a nominal voltage of 120 volts RMS, so a 60 watt bulb will pull 0.5 amps RMS.

This depends on the system voltage….

At 12 volts, 60 watts/12 volts = 5 amps.

At 120 volts (which is standard for U.S. homes), 60 watts/120 volts = 0.5 amps. Amps = Watts / Volts

There are a few units which are used to represent the amount of electricity used are:

Volts – Electrical force or pressure behind the electrons in a circuit. Very similar to water pressure or PSI, it tells us the system voltage.

Amps – The number of electrons flowing past a defined point in a second. This is like gallons per second in a pipe, it tells us the electrical current in a wire.

Watts – Total amount of electrical energy. Watts = Volts x Amps

that is equivalent to 240 watts (4 x 60). watts = volts x amps. Amperage depends on circuit voltage, then, which is nominally 120 volts in a north american household. so 4 60 watt lightbulbs should draw about 2 amps.

.5 amps @ 120 volts.

It could draw .54 amps if the voltage was lower than 120vac. or 111 volts(very low).

P=VI

I=P/V

The standard voltage in a US home is 120V.

I=60watt/120V

I=1/2 A
