How many watts equal 1 amp?

How many watts are equivalent to 1 amp? Additionally, can you explain how this relationship is determined, particularly in relation to voltage?

11 Answers

It’s watts divided by volts equals amps.

Example: 1200 watts at 120 volts is 10 amps.

To get the watts if you know the amps, multiply the amps times the volts. 10 amps at 120 volts is 1200 watts.

You need to know the voltage. Standard wall outlet or light fixture voltage in US is 110 volts. As other answers have implied, amps=watts/volts. So, a hundred watt light bulb draws about 1 amp, a 1400 watt hair dryer draws about 14 amps, and two hair dryers (28 amps) plugged into the same circuit probably blows the breaker, because most 110 v. breakers will only handle 15-20 amps. Most power tools will have an amperage rating attached–larger tools (table saws) are sometimes rated in horsepower, rather than amps. BTW, using extension cords, esp. long ones or thin gauge, increases the amperage draw, making circuit breaker MORE likely to trip. Esp. true with heavy equipment, like air compressors.

12000 watts of draw power how many amps is that and what size breaker will I need it to be on for a 110 volt plug

P=V X I

P= 230 Vx 30 AMPS (ASSUME)

=690 WATTS

IF THERE IS A POWER FACTOR THEN

P= V X I X COS(FI)

Watts = Amps X Volts. You need to know the voltage drop across the resistance.

Volts = Amps X Resistance to find the voltage.
