i stepped on a nail and it went through my foot…what do i do?

I stepped on a nail, and it went through my foot. What should I do?

I'm sitting here bleeding quite a bit, but it doesn't really hurt. I'm not planning to go to the doctor. Should I just leave the nail in place? It's not bothering me much at all. Pain doesn't really phase me; I once walked on a broken fibula for five days without much concern. So, what should I do now?

Go see a Dr. You need to get a Tetanus shot or you could end up very sick or dead. The wound needs to be cleaned out, the bleeding should help, but it’s not enough. Depending upon the size of the hole, you may need a stitch to keep it from getting infected.

You may need a tetanus shot. Oh and that broken bone you walked on for five days…well it is very likely that you set yourself up for a lot of pain (arthritis) in the future….your body deserves to be given a little more attention. I hope you will do so.

Be well

What should I do if I get a puncture injury?

Minor wounds: Clean the wound thoroughly with soap and warm water. Leave the wound uncovered, if possible.

Severe injuries: – See a health care provider for evaluation and treatment (stitches, antibiotics, or a Td booster shot).

Pay attention to any signs of infection such as redness or warmth of the wound, swelling, tenderness, or fever. If signs of infection develop, consult your health care provider.

If I am injured, how do I know if I need a tetanus shot?

For a minor injury – Get a tetanus shot if your last tetanus shot was over 10 years ago.

For a complicated or contaminated wound (including puncture wounds) – Get a tetanus shot if your last tetanus shot was over 5 years ago.

Depends how far in there it is. First of all i hope you’ve had a tetanus shot, and second of all, if it’s really deep in there, i’d go to an urgent care, because if you try to take it out yourself you can permanently damage your foot, which could hinder your walking. And I definitely would NOT leave the nail in your foot. I will get infected and maybe cause a staff infection, which could be fatal. But if its not too deep, i’d take it out and wash it good with soap and water and keep it bandaged up for a good week.

–>just saw your details and HOLY SH!T. Go to an urgent care, it’ll only be like $25 and it will save your foot.

I and another small boy both accidentally stepped on nails. Our fathers were taking apart and relocating an old shed, and all of us kids ran around barefoot, as is normal in North Carolina. It was one of the most painful experiences of my life, but the other boy didn’t show his pain as much as I did. It was embarrassing, because that other kid was a lot younger than I was. I had to soak my foot in hot water to stop the infection.

Bleeding is good to wash out the poison, but if you haven’t had your tetanus shot in the last 10 years, you’ll need to go get one. Rabies is not an issue.

However, gangrene can become an issue. If it gets infected you can develop gangrene, which could cause you to lose your foot, or even your life. Don’t ignore this. Go to a doctor please.

you need to see a doctor. Get the wound cleaned really good and apply antiseptic. Make sure you’ve had a tetanus shot recently. If not, you HAVE to go to the doctor and get one.

If you have bled a lot then you need to apply some pressure to stop the bleeding – then try to cleanse the wound and lastly make sure your tetness shots are up to date so you don’t get lock jaw or rabbies.
