I want to name my baby Kailani pronounced Kayloni, it is Hawaiin, I get many strange looks, any thoughts?

I am considering naming my baby Kailani, pronounced "Kayloni." This name has Hawaiian origins, but I often receive strange looks when I mention it. I would love to hear your thoughts on this name choice and any insights you may have regarding its uniqueness or cultural significance.

First of all if its Hawaiian and its spelled KAILANI then it would be pronounced k-eye-lawn-ee

the ‘A&I’ make an “i” or “eye” sound

Keilani or Kayelani (kayelani is non hawaiian yet same pronounciation) would be a better choice for you!

And to answer your question about getting weird looks I would never give wierd looks but aIl as my children would be hawaiian would think it was weird that you attempted a hawaiian name and couldn’t even spell it it seem kind of poser-ish, if you will. like naming your daughter Xunanutich (AFRICAN ORIGIN) and being pasty white farmer Who didnt spell it right and botched the name and disrespected its country of origin.

Also here are some Hawaiian names with correct spellings as Keilani is like the “Ashley” of the islands

Lehua (lei-hu-ah)

Leiho’onani (lay-ho-o-naw-nee)

Kapua (kah-pu-a)

Kanoe (ka-no-ay)

And please spell the name Kayelani (non hawaiian) like that or like Keilani as it is insulting to call a name Hawaiian if is not Such as Kailani , unless you pronouce it Ky-lawni

Kai means ocean, lani means heavenly, Heavenly Ocean would be the correct meaning if that spelling.

This was an interesting article, and a contact of mine–who seems to be fascinated with names–showed me an article about the naming laws in Germany, and I thought it made sense. A parent who wants to give their child a unique name is one thing, but a parent who names their child something that is going to be offensive, extremely long, completely unpronounceable, or something absolutely ridiculous that it will get them harassed aren’t being great parents. Seriously. I can’t understand why a parent would put their own selfish need to be unique above their child’s self-esteem and well-being. Are you that afraid that your child’s personality won’t be enough to make them stand out that you have to give them an unimaginably ridiculous name to make them stand out? Should there be laws? Yes, there very well should be, because there are some people who are just that stupid and cruel out there that will name their child Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11… and have it pronounced as Albin. I know unusual names, but if I met that Typo-Boy, I’m not sure I would be able to stop myself from laughing. Do their parents want this to happen to their children every time they’re asked for their name? Are they doing this for shits and giggles? Do they not have the capacity to think about how much of an outcast their child will be in school and in the workplace when they grow up? Can they not see how seriously people will *not* take them? Do they not give a damn about their child in the least? I understand wanting to fight the laws, but why put your child at stake? You’d sacrifice your child to overturn a law that isn’t necessarily harming someone? Frankly, I think those courts should’ve looked into more than just the name. Apple is fine. I mean, it’s not really fine, but it’s not an absolutely horrible name. Pilot Inspektor on the other hand is beyond ridiculous as is Sage Moonblood. Just because you’re a celebrity, it doesn’t mean your child is going to be treated like freakin’ royalty or they’re going to be excused for having that name. Children can be really cruel, and they don’t differentiate between famous children and not famous children, so chances are that those kids are going to have a difficult time in school, more than other children most likely. If their parents were smart enough to realize this, maybe *they* wouldn’t have been so cruel and opted to give them a stupid name. Someone help those poor children.

I think it’s a beautiful name. Don’t worry about those strange looks. My god-daughter’s name is Pajah (the name is Indian I think), but people are always saying crap about her name. Some people are just haters and others don’t understand the uniqueness and beauty of the name. Who wants to go to school and be the 13th Ashley Nicole in the class? Exactly….

its a nice enough name, but honestly, I think it’s used more for boys in Hawaii. I know a guy with that name.

who cares what people say? if they give u weird looks, its bc theyre jealous they didnt think to name thier kid that! my name is Cailey, and my rents almost spelled it Cailei, and honestly, i think it rocks! i LOVE unique names, and honestly, that is a very awesome name! dont be afraid to be differeent…ur kid will love you for it, bc most likely theyll be the only Kailani in the school! how awesome is that? if it was to be a say, Ashley or Tom name, very genric, how diffcult would that be? you just yell Kailani and there they are, not 10 different people! hope i helped, and remember, ilove that name! i think its very cool!!!!
