If 30.0g of MgSO4*7H2O is thoroughly heated, what mass of anhydrous magnesium sulfate will remain?
If 30.0 g of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (MgSO4·7H2O) is thoroughly heated, what mass of anhydrous magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) will remain after the water molecules are lost?

Anhydrous magnesium sulfate would be the mass of magnesium sulfate without the water of crystallization.
Hence
Mass of magnesium sulphate = 24 + 32 + 16 X 4
= 120
Mass of hydrated magnesium sulphate
= 24 + 32 + 16 X 4 + 7 X 18
= 246
Mass of anhydrous magnesium sulfate
= 120/246 X 30
= 14.63414634g
= 14.6g (3 significant figures)
Hope you have had all your queries cleared.
RMM of the whole compound = 246 g
Rmm of 7H2O = 126g
so RMM of anhydrous sulfate = 120g
mass of anhydrous sulfate = (120/246) * 30g = 14.63g.
