What are the independent, dependent, and constant variables in the experiment to determine if heating a cup of water allows it to dissolve more sugar?
What are the independent, dependent, and constant variables in the experiment to determine if heating a cup of water increases its ability to dissolve sugar?
In this experiment, we aim to investigate whether the temperature of water affects its capacity to dissolve sugar. Understanding the roles of each variable is crucial for conducting a successful and scientifically sound experiment. Can you help me identify the independent, dependent, and constant variables?

To determine which variables are which, it can be helpful to ask the following questions:
What am I changing? This is your independent variable.
What is changing as a result of my actions? This is your dependent variable.
What stays the same no matter what I do to ensure that results can be compared? This is your constant.
In this case, you are changing the heat of the water (either heating or not heating the cup of water), so it is the independent variable.
The amount of sugar that is dissolved is based on the heat of the water. Since the heat of the water is the result of your actions, the amount of sugar dissolved is the dependent variable.
Now, what in this experiment stays constant? You should use the same amount of water and sugar in each trial to ensure that the only potential effect on the dissolving rate is heat. Therefore, the amounts of water and sugar are constant variables.... Show More

Heating a cup of water will allow it to dissolve more sugar. The independent (manipulated) variable is the temperature of the water, while the dependent variable is the amount of sugar that dissolves. The constant is the solubility of sugar.... Show More
